Google has responded to questions from our Search Community, exploring how AI Mode and AI Max are reshaping search through deeper intent signals, conversational queries and new ad-matching dynamics. As discovery becomes more complex, approaches that draw on stronger first-party data and AI-aware search skills are increasingly coming into focus
How do you plan to differentiate AI Mode vs. AI Max to agencies and clients in terms of control, transparency, and performance?
AI Mode is our most powerful AI search, with more advanced reasoning and multimodality, and the ability to go deeper through follow-up questions and helpful links to the web. AI Mode brings together what people love about Google Search – the speed, accuracy, freshness, and connection to the web – with the power, reasoning, and conversationality of our Gemini models.
Under the hood, AI Mode uses our query fan-out technique, breaking down your question into subtopics and issuing a multitude of queries simultaneously on your behalf.
AI Max for Search Campaigns on the other hand is a comprehensive suite of targeting and creative enhancements to help you take your Search campaigns to the next level. AI Max uses the latest AI technology to expand the reach and deliver tailored creatives on Search campaigns — with improved reporting and more granular controls.
In AI Mode, users ask complex / conversational / answer seeking queries which advertisers are less likely to be targeting as keywords today. Further, Ads in AI Mode (currently US only experiment) are matched to our understanding of the user intent based on not just the user query but also the content of the AI Mode response. This is why we recommend advertisers prioritise using AI-powered targeting solutions like Broad match, Performance Max and AI Max to match to relevant ads.
What role will first-party data play in strengthening advertiser performance in an AI-driven search environment?

- Reassuring on Control and Transparency: For our advertising partners, we continue to uphold the fundamental principles of control and transparency that they expect from us, including the clear distinction between ads and organic results in the evolving search experience. Advertisers retain control over their campaigns, for instance, through the ability to steer AI-powered solutions to meet specific marketing objectives.
What would be the one thing you would suggest advertisers, agencies and clients could do immediately to prepare for the future of Search advertising?
The single most impactful thing advertisers and agencies can do immediately to prepare for the future of Search advertising is to adopt and deploy Google's AI-powered solutions such as Broad Match, Performance Max and AI Max for Search campaigns.
This is the fastest path to fully aligning with and capitalising on the shift to longer and more complex queries and unlocking richer intent & relevance signals.
What skills and capabilities do you think your teams will need to future-proof your search offering as AI evolves?
This is a crucial question for our partners, as the required skills must evolve alongside the technology. For agency and advertiser teams, future-proofing their search offering will require a pivot from manual execution to becoming strategic partners who maximise the value of AI. Competencies such as strategic business consulting, mastering the deployment of AI solutions on strong first-party data foundations, best-in-class measurement approach and a test-and-learn mindset are essential to achieving this capability shift.
